UK economy grows more than expected: How optimistic should you be?

The United Kingdom’s economy experienced a growth of 0.7% at the beginning of the year, surpassing expectations. However, despite this positive development, experts do not anticipate this level of growth to be sustained. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) indicated that spending on services such as retail, hospitality, and finance played a significant role in driving this growth. Moreover, the growth figure for March 2025 also outperformed expectations with a 0.2% expansion that month.

In comparison to other major economies worldwide, the UK’s growth rate of under 1% may seem modest, but it exceeds that of countries like the US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan within the G7 group. These countries have faced challenges due to the tariffs implemented by the US earlier in the year, impacting global trade. Despite these hurdles, the UK managed to outperform predictions, indicating a positive trend in its economic performance.

The impact of Donald Trump’s tariffs on foreign goods, introduced after the timeframe covered in the latest economic figures, is yet to be fully realized. Many businesses preemptively exported their goods to the US ahead of the tariff implementation, contributing to the growth in production and sales during the period. Economist Paul Dales suggested that this growth might represent the peak for the year, as the application of tariffs could potentially slow down growth, particularly in UK exports to the US.

While a growing UK economy typically translates to increased prosperity for individuals, the recent rise in bills and taxes could dampen the overall impact. With energy, water, phone, broadband, council tax, car tax, and TV license fees all seeing an increase, coupled with businesses facing higher National Insurance payments and minimum wage increments hindering hiring capabilities, the broader population may not immediately benefit from the economic upturn
