This decision comes amidst a perceived lack of action by politicians in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling regarding gender. According to the UK’s highest court, a woman is defined by biological sex under equality law, and organizers feel that politicians have not adequately addressed this issue.
As a result of this ban, parties will not be allowed to register for a space or host a stall at the annual LGBT+ march on July 19th. Additionally, politicians will be prohibited from making speeches at the event. This move follows similar actions by Pride groups in Birmingham, Brighton, London, and Manchester as a show of solidarity with the transgender community.
Despite the ban on political parties, individual politicians can still attend the event as representatives of their local community. Glasgow’s organizing committee noted that many politicians have been supportive of the event in the past. However, the committee felt compelled to act due to what they described as a lack of action and delay in comments from political parties following the Supreme Court ruling.
The ruling, which followed a lengthy legal battle, reaffirmed that sex is defined by biology under the 2010 Equality Act.
