A concerning trend has emerged in mid Wales, where pet owners are being advised to exercise caution as a significant number of cats have gone missing in recent months. The Garth Owen area of Newtown, Powys, has seen around 10 cats vanish in the past year, with a spike in disappearances in the last few months, according to Kelly Healy, the Powys council representative for the area. She expressed suspicion towards the unusual circumstances, suggesting foul play may be involved in the cats’ disappearances.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed receiving reports of missing cats in the Garth Owen area of Newtown and have launched investigations to determine if a criminal act has taken place. Aldwyth Bates, the founder of Powys Animal Welfare charity, raised concerns after receiving distress calls from members of the public reporting missing cats. She emphasized the concentrated nature of the disappearances in a specific area over a short period, urging pet owners to remain vigilant.
Despite some cats being reunited with their owners through microchipping, several felines remain unaccounted for. Bates highlighted the abnormal number of disappearances in a particular section of an estate, demanding a thorough police inquiry into the matter. Craig Beckerleg, whose cat Ringo was found by a rescue charity in Shrewsbury, echoed similar concerns about the suspicious trend. Neighbors in the Garth Owen area have also reported multiple cat disappearances, with some cats being found miles away in different directions.
Beckerleg shared the relief of having Ringo safely returned but emphasized the emotional toll the disappearance took on his family, particularly his young son. Healy, the Liberal Democrat councillor for Newtown, pointed out the recurring pattern of missing cats, citing cases from the past year where cats vanished in close succession. With the community on high alert, pet owners are encouraged to report any suspicions or missing felines to the authorities for further investigation
