Donegal: 'Heartbreaking' to watch Buncrana tragedy unfold

The devastating incident involving two missing teenage boys in Buncrana, County Donegal, has left the community in mourning. The RNLI officer, Joe Joyce, shared the heart-wrenching experience of witnessing families watching helplessly as the search for the boys unfolded. Emmanuel Familola, 16, originally from Nigeria, and Matt Sibanda, 18, from Zimbabwe tragically lost their lives after getting into difficulty in the water near Buncrana on Saturday.

The tragic events unfolded after the Irish Coast Guard received a report of people in distress in the water. It was reported that a group playing football on the beach at Ned’s Point had ventured into the water to retrieve a ball. Despite efforts to rescue the boys, only one juvenile was rescued and later succumbed to the incident at Letterkenny University Hospital.

The rescue efforts involved multiple agencies, including the RNLI, the Irish Coast Guard, and local volunteers. Various resources, such as lifeboats, drones, and an Irish Coast Guard helicopter, were utilized in the search operation. Father Bradley offered comfort to the families during the ordeal, leading prayer services and providing support in the face of the tragedy.

The principals of Scoil Mhuire and Crana College expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Emmanuel and Matt. The community has come together to pay tribute to the teenagers and offer support to their families. Councillor Fionán Bradley remembered Emmanuel as a beloved individual, universally admired both within and outside of school.
