Sir Keir Starmer has announced plans to revamp the country’s immigration system, aiming to enforce stricter English language tests for all visa applicants and their adult dependents. The proposed reforms also include an extension of the settlement period, requiring migrants to wait 10 years instead of the current five before applying to settle in the UK.
Labour’s much-awaited migration regulations are set to be unveiled on Monday, with the prime minister vowing to establish a more controlled, selective, and fair system. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp, however, dismissed the notion that Sir Keir is tough on immigration and pledged to push for a cap on migration in Parliament.
The new rules are expected to raise the English language requirements for all immigration pathways into the UK and introduce language competency tests for adult dependents. While critics argue that these changes may lead to family separations, research indicates that migrants themselves view language skills as crucial for employment opportunities.
The overhaul of the immigration system, termed a “clean break from the past” by Sir Keir, also involves the elimination of automatic settlement rights after five years. Instead, most migrants will have to reside in the UK for at least ten years before being eligible for settled status and the path to citizenship.
