A stabbing incident that occurred in a city center bank has led to murder charges being brought against a man, with a trial set for the New Year. Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur, 47, of Western Road, Derby, was accused of murdering Gurvinder Johal, 37, who was stabbed inside Lloyds on St Peter’s Street in the afternoon on Tuesday. The accused appeared via video link at Derby Crown Court from HMP Nottingham and was informed by Judge Shaun Smith KC, through an interpreter, that the trial is provisionally scheduled for 19 January 2026. No request for bail was made during the hearing.
Following the court proceedings, Judge Smith KC instructed Mr. Cabdiraxmaan Nur that he would be remanded in custody until the trial. The custody time limit was extended to the end of January 2026 to allow for the submission of reports ahead of the anticipated two to three-week-long trial. The defendant was also informed that he would need to appear in court again on 15 August. Additionally, a second man in his 30s, who was arrested in connection with the stabbing incident, was released without any further action according to Derbyshire Police.
The tragic incident prompted an outpouring of tributes, with flowers being laid outside Lloyds in St Peter’s Street in memory of Mr. Johal. A family friend described Mr. Johal as “a smiler” and “a good friend” in an interview with the BBC. The Independent Office for Police Conduct had initially received a referral from the police force regarding the case but later concluded that it did not meet the threshold for a valid referral. The circumstances surrounding the incident continue to be investigated, with details emerging as the case progresses through the legal system.
The community has been deeply affected by the tragic loss of Mr. Johal, with support being shown through gestures like floral tributes laid outside the bank where the incident took place. The upcoming trial in January 2026 is expected to shed more light on the events that led to the fatal stabbing, as justice is sought for the victim and his loved ones.
