Reform clarifies council flag policy over Lancashire red rose row

Reform UK recently faced backlash over a statement made by chairman Zia Yusuf regarding the flying of flags from council buildings. Initially, it was announced that only the Union Jack and St George’s flag would be permitted to be flown in Reform-controlled English councils, prompting criticism from Labour MP Chris Webb for supposedly “banning” the Lancashire red rose flag. However, Reform later clarified that county flags, including the Lancashire red rose, would still be flown alongside the Union Jack and St George’s flag.

A spokesperson for Reform emphasized their pride in the country and its history, distinguishing themselves from the Tories and Labour. Lancashire County Council confirmed that they would continue to fly the red rose flag outside their buildings despite the controversy surrounding Reform’s initial announcement.

Following the recent local elections, Reform gained control of 10 local authorities including Lancashire, Durham, and Staffordshire. Criticism from both Labour and Conservative MPs arose over the notion that county flags would not be allowed to fly. Conservative MP Dr Luke Evans questioned whether this meant Leicestershire County Council would be banned from flying the Leicestershire county flag, as the Tories lost control of the council to Reform. Additionally, Labour MP Mike Tapp raised concerns over the Ukrainian flag potentially being banned from flying, urging Reform to reconsider their decision
