Paddleboard firm owner Nerys Lloyd was sacked as PC for fraud claim

Former police officer Nerys Lloyd, 39, from Aberavon, was sentenced to 10 years and six months in jail after a tragic incident on the River Cleddau in October 2021, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals during a paddleboard excursion organized by her company, Salty Dog. Lloyd had previously admitted to gross negligence manslaughter in relation to the incident.

Following the conclusion of the criminal case, South Wales Police released information about an unrelated incident involving Lloyd. It was revealed that Lloyd was dismissed from the police force in 2022 due to a fraudulent insurance claim she made against the South Wales Police Federation motor insurance scheme. The claim was for over £500, while the actual cost of repairs was only around £20.

Chief Constable Jeremy Vaughan described the incident as a breach of professional standards, highlighting issues with honesty, integrity, and bringing discredit to the police service. Lloyd admitted to her wrongdoing and immediately repaid the money claimed. She also accepted a formal caution for fraud by false representation under the Fraud Act 2006.

At a misconduct hearing in January 2022, Chief Constable Vaughan determined that Lloyd should be dismissed without notice for her actions. Despite being suspended by South Wales Police at the time of the tragic river incident, the judge overseeing the sentencing, Mrs. Justice Mary Stacey, noted that Lloyd’s prior caution for fraud would not impact the sentencing decision
