Coronation Street veteran actor Philip Lowrie has passed away at the age of 88. Lowrie, known for his portrayal of Dennis Tanner in the first episode of the long-running soap in 1960, died on Friday, as confirmed by his publicist Mario Renzullo. Renzullo described Lowrie as a beloved actor who became a cornerstone of Coronation Street’s storytelling, making his character Dennis Tanner a memorable figure in the show.
Born in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, Lowrie’s role as Dennis Tanner in Coronation Street solidified his place as a national heartthrob at the soap’s inception over six decades ago. In the 2000s and 2010s, Lowrie took on lead roles in stage productions such as Dame Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, solidifying his reputation as a talented actor beyond the realm of soap operas.
In September 2011, Lowrie was recognized by the Guinness World Records for the longest gap between television appearances as the same character in a single show.
