Official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal a total of 152,416 thefts from the person offences were recorded, marking the highest number since data collection methods were established in 2003. Additionally, shoplifting incidents exceeded half a million for the first time.
On a positive note, the number of homicides reported in 2024 was the lowest in a decade. Overall crime rates remained below pre-pandemic levels and have decreased by more than 75% since the mid-1990s. However, there was a 2% increase in knife crime offences, with police recording 54,587 incidents last year, while firearm offences decreased by 20%.
In response to the data, policing minister Dame Diana Johnson emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling criminal activity within communities. She stated that the government is deploying almost 3,000 additional police officers in neighborhood roles this year to address the issue. The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) provides further insight into the prevalence of crime by conducting face-to-face surveys with individuals aged 16 and older.
According to the survey, there were an estimated 9.6 million incidents of “headline crime” in 2024, encompassing theft, robbery, fraud, and violent offenses. Theft cases saw a notable increase, with theft from the person offenses rising by 50% and theft from outside dwellings, such as stolen courier packages, increasing by 19%. Fraud incidents also surged by 33%, reaching approximately 4.1 million cases, with a significant number of victims receiving full reimbursement. Despite these concerning trends, violent crime levels remained stable, indicating no significant change over the years.
