Leah Harrison, a 10-year-old girl, tragically lost her life in a mudslide during a school trip. The incident occurred while she was on a residential visit to Carlton Adventure in Carlton-in-Cleveland. Despite the efforts made, Leah was swept away by the mudslide, leaving her unable to breathe. The jury at Teesside Coroners Court ruled her death as an accident, stating that she was “swept off her feet” by the unexpected mudslide.
Leah’s mother, Michelle Harrison, described her late daughter as a joyful individual with an infectious smile. Even though Leah had been unwell with tonsillitis prior to the trip, she was eagerly looking forward to the adventure center visit. The headteacher of Mount Pleasant Primary School, Joanne Blackham, who was also present during the school trip, expressed how Leah impressed her with her participation in various activities which pushed her out of her comfort zone.
During the inquest, it was revealed that the mudslide which led to Leah’s demise was unforeseen and could not have been predicted or avoided. An activities co-ordinator, Paul Godwin, disclosed that the risk was completely unexpected and not included in any risk assessment due to the lack of prior indication. Despite a two-month investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) which concluded that no one was at fault, the tragic incident continues to serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of natural disasters
