Water restored for some Devon properties after burst main

Following a burst main in west Devon, South West Water (SWW) has announced that water supplies have been restored to some properties. Despite this, several schools and businesses remained closed due to ongoing issues. Areas affected by the burst main included Plymouth, Bere Alston, Yelverton, and Tavistock, with around 13,000 properties experiencing water supply disruptions.

SWW confirmed that affected properties would receive £200 in compensation for the inconvenience caused by the water supply issues. While the company stated that most customers should now have their water restored, some schools continued to face challenges. Whitchurch Community Primary School and Bickleigh Down Church Of England Primary School were among those closed due to the lack of water.

In the midst of the water supply problems, Bere Alston Primary Academy was forced to send students home after water supplies disappeared by 09:30, despite being present at 07:00. The Nuffield Health Devonshire leisure center and Plymouth Marjon University also remained closed due to the ongoing water issues. SWW reassured customers that their water network was operational, although isolated issues could still be experienced by some individuals.

Fred Thomas, the MP for Plymouth Moor View, expressed frustration on behalf of residents regarding the poor communication from SWW surrounding the water supply disruptions. Thomas demanded an improved compensation package for affected customers, with SWW revising their compensation plan to provide £250 to household customers and £500 to businesses for the inconveniences caused by the burst main. The company advised customers to expect some discolouration in their water as services return to normal, and provided instructions on how to address potential air locks in the water supply system
