A new research project is calling on ravers in East Anglia to participate in documenting the “hidden history” of the region’s rave culture. ‘Storm From The East: Rural and Coastal Rave Culture in East Anglia’ is inviting individuals who attended free parties and unlicensed raves between 1989 and 2019 to share their experiences. The project aims to shed light on rave culture in areas like Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, and Suffolk, showcasing a unique aspect of UK history.
Participants are encouraged to fill out a survey where they can recount their memories of dancing, DJing, or organizing events in East Anglia. The project, spearheaded by historian and dance music journalist Matt Anniss, seeks to hear from a variety of individuals who contributed to the region’s rave scene. Selected respondents may have the opportunity to be interviewed in 2025 to discuss their personal experiences in more detail.
All contributions to the project are confidential and must be made by those who attended at least one free party or paid-for unlicensed event in East Anglia over the span of three decades. The objective is to create a comprehensive study of the region’s rave culture, with a focus on the grassroots movements that shaped the scene. Interested parties can access the survey through the provided link to share their insights and memories
