In response to an ongoing disagreement over pay, employees at Weetabix have taken the decision to go on strike. The workers at the breakfast cereal company, situated in Northamptonshire at the Burton Latimer and Corby sites, are planning protests commencing on 29th April. The impending picket lines will consist of members from the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw), who have been advocating for a pay increase.
Expressing their disappointment with Usdaw’s choice, Weetabix mentioned their unwavering commitment to investing in their workforce and offering competitive salaries. A spokesperson for the company acknowledged the decision made by the production operators and their representatives, stating, “We respect the voice of our production operators and their representatives.” Despite this setback, Weetabix conveyed their willingness to engage in further discussions with the team and their representatives to reach a fair and equitable resolution.
Reflecting on the unsuccessful negotiations thus far, Gavin Dadley, the regional secretary for Usdaw, highlighted the absence of an acceptable offer that could be endorsed by the membership. As a result, the organization has informed the company of their plans to initiate industrial action. Dadley emphasized Usdaw’s unwavering dedication to finding a mutually agreeable solution to bring an end to this dispute. Notably, this is not the first instance of workers at the site resorting to strike action, as a similar situation unfolded in 2021 concerning remuneration for unsocial hours
