BAMBII has raised concerns about Coachella compensating artists with “exposure” after experiencing issues with the sound system during her performance at the festival’s first weekend. The Canadian DJ and producer took the stage at the Do LaB on Friday afternoon, sharing the lineup with artists like Jyoty, Layla Benitez, ATRIP, and DJ Pee Wee. Following her set, BAMBII took to Instagram to express her frustration over the sound system malfunction, despite not being paid by the festival.
In a series of Instagram stories, BAMBII revealed that the malfunction had misrepresented her and led to embarrassment in front of the audience. She emphasized that she had invested her own money to be part of the festival and expected at least a functioning sound system for the performance. Additionally, she criticized the normalization of artists performing for free at Coachella and other industry institutions, highlighting the disproportionate impact on artists of color and female artists.
BAMBII pointed out that many artists, especially up-and-coming female artists, have to work hard to secure a spot at festivals like Coachella but are often not compensated adequately. She expressed her disappointment with the exploitative nature of such exchanges and the lack of basic standards being met for artists. Despite the perceived privilege of performing at Coachella, BAMBII stressed the importance of speaking out against unfair treatment to prevent the normalization of exploitative practices in the music industry.
