Wagatha: Coleen Rooney lawyers did not commit misconduct, says High Court judge

Coleen Rooney’s legal team has been cleared of any misconduct in the ongoing legal battle with Rebekah Vardy over costs incurred during the defamation case famously known as Wagatha Christie. Last year, Mrs. Vardy brought a libel case against Mrs. Rooney, which she ultimately lost. The current dispute revolves around the amount that Mrs. Vardy is required to pay in legal fees.

In a recent ruling, a High Court judge dismissed Mrs. Vardy’s appeal against the decision that Mrs. Rooney’s lawyers had not engaged in any wrongdoing. The judge upheld the previous ruling that it was not appropriate to reduce the amount owed by Mrs. Vardy. A spokesperson for Mrs. Vardy expressed their feelings of being “gratified” that the matter was investigated, but ultimately “disappointed” by the outcome, stating their desire to move forward and focus on the future.

The legal saga began when Mrs. Rooney accused someone using Mrs. Vardy’s Instagram account of leaking private information to the media. Mrs. Vardy took legal action for libel, but the court found in favor of Mrs. Rooney, stating that the allegations were substantially true. In terms of costs, Mrs. Vardy was ordered to pay a significant portion of Mrs. Rooney’s legal fees, including an initial payment of £800,000, which Mrs. Vardy’s lawyer argued was disproportionate.

Despite the claims of misconduct by understating costs, the court concluded that there was no intentional wrongdoing by Mrs. Rooney’s legal team. The judge noted a lack of transparency but did not deem it sufficient to constitute misconduct. The ongoing dispute over exact costs owed continues, with Mrs. Vardy appealing the decision while Mrs. Rooney’s lawyers maintain that the challenge is without merit. Both parties have yet to comment on the latest developments
