£19.99With the upcoming local and mayoral elections in England scheduled for May, registration to vote will be closing on Friday. Interested individuals have until 23:59 BST on Friday to submit their application to register in order to participate in the upcoming elections. This election will see the participation of 24 out of 317 councils in England, along with some mayoral authorities on May 1st, marking the first significant set of polls since the landslide victory by Labour in last year’s general election.
Approximately 1,650 seats will be up for grabs across 14 county councils, eight unitary authorities, one metropolitan district, and in the Isles of Scilly. Moreover, there will be mayoral elections taking place in the West of England, Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Hull, East Yorkshire, and Greater Lincolnshire. Originally, elections were planned for all 21 county councils in England, but the government recently announced that elections would be postponed in nine areas where councils are undergoing reorganization and devolution.
In addition to the local and mayoral elections, there will also be a Westminster by-election taking place in the constituency of Runcorn and Helsby in Cheshire on the same day. It is important to note that there are no local elections scheduled in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Niki Nixon, the director of communications at the Electoral Commission, emphasized the importance of registering to vote before the deadline in order to participate in the upcoming elections on May 1st. Individuals who have changed their details or address since the general election last year will need to re-register in order to vote.
The areas where elections to county councils will be taking place include Cambridgeshire, Derbyshire, Devon, Gloucestershire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire. Additionally, elections will be held in the unitary authorities of Buckinghamshire, Cornwall, Durham, North Northamptonshire, Northumberland, Shropshire, West Northamptonshire, and Wiltshire, as well as at Doncaster Metropolitan Council and the Isles of Scilly with its unique governance structure. Don’t forget to register before the deadline to have your say in these important elections
