Artist to explore the meaning of home during Walton residency

Residents of Walton are encouraged to participate in a series of workshops at the Spellow Community Hub and Library to reflect on the concept of home. Artist Dora Colquhoun, commissioned by Culture Liverpool, will lead these workshops. The first workshop will take place on Saturday, April 12th from 11:30 to 12:45. The family-friendly session will draw inspiration from well-known characters who ventured out from their homes for adventures, such as Dorothy, Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, and The Three Little Pigs.

The Welcome Home project will conclude with a celebration event on Saturday, June 21st, featuring a living room installation in the library showcasing meaningful objects collected from residents throughout the workshop series. This initiative is part of Culture Liverpool’s Creative Neighbourhoods program, which aims to engage with communities and neighborhoods across Liverpool through collaborative projects and creative interventions. These projects include artistic residencies, public art, events, and creative workshops that seek to address the unique needs of each neighborhood and foster local pride, inclusivity, and empowerment.

Funding for this project was made possible through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, aiming to enhance the sense of pride among Liverpool residents and promote a feeling of belonging for both artists and audiences. The sessions are scheduled to run on various dates in May, with family sessions led by storyteller Isaac Nixon. Additionally, there will be sessions geared towards adults, emphasizing storytelling and cultural connections in the community. The project builds upon previous engagements with the residents of County Road, including creative writing courses and artist residencies in collaboration with local organizations.

Dora Colquhoun highlights the collaborative nature of the project, aiming to explore different cultures’ needs for safety and comfort. Through creative workshops, the project seeks to facilitate connections and mutual understanding among residents, fostering a welcoming environment for discussions about identity and aspirations for the future. Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing, and Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle, emphasizes the project’s goal of providing marginalized communities a platform to share their stories, enhancing confidence, belonging, and pride in cultural heritage while promoting unity among residents
