​98 killed and over 200 injured after roof collapses at Dominican Republic nightclub

The collapse of a popular nightclub in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic, has resulted in a tragic incident where at least 98 individuals lost their lives, with over 200 more sustaining injuries. The dreadful event occurred during a concert at Jet Set, a well-known nightclub and live music venue in the capital, in the early hours of April 8.

During the performance by merengue singer Rubby Pérez, the roof of the nightclub suddenly collapsed around 1:AM, leaving more than 300 people inside trapped under the rubble. Emergency responders are currently working to find survivors, however, there are concerns that the death toll may increase further as the search continues.

Reports from the National Emergency System indicate that 223 individuals were injured in the collapse, with the death toll standing at 98 as of now (“CNN”). Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Emergency Operations Center, emphasized the ongoing search for survivors, stating, “We continue clearing debris and searching for people, we’re going to search tirelessly for people.”

Among the victims were notable figures such as politicians and athletes, including the governor of Monte Cristi province, Nelsy Cruz, as well as former Major League Baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco. In response to the tragedy, President of the Dominican Republic Luis Abinader announced three days of national mourning and expressed his condolences to the affected families
