Prime minister confirms new UK Universal theme park in Bedford

A future Universal theme park has been given the green light to be built in the UK, according to the government’s confirmation. Planned to occupy the former Kempston Hardwick brickworks site near Bedford, the development is projected to create 28,000 jobs before its scheduled opening in 2031. This expansive 476-acre complex is expected to attract 8.5 million visitors in its inaugural year and contribute around £50 billion to the UK economy by 2055.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his enthusiasm for the multi-billion-pound investment made by Universal, citing its potential to establish one of the largest entertainment parks in Europe, thereby placing Bedford on a prominent global platform. The proposal by Universal Destinations and Experiences indicates that 80% of the job opportunities generated will be sourced from Bedfordshire and neighboring regions. This forthcoming park will mark the entrance of a Universal-branded destination in Europe, enhancing the UK’s appeal to a wider audience.

Detailed plans unveiled by Universal Destinations & Experiences outline the inclusion of a theme park, a 500-room hotel, and a commercial complex within the UK site. However, these proposals are contingent upon approval from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. With the acquisition of 476 acres of land already secured for the project, Universal has the option to acquire additional land to expand the plot to approximately 700 acres, facilitating connectivity with transportation networks. Despite concerns from some residents regarding the sufficiency of infrastructure, a significant majority of local individuals and organizations have voiced their support for the development.

In response to the impending construction of the Universal theme park, the government has pledged to invest in infrastructural enhancements to accommodate the influx of visitors. Plans for the improvement of the Wixams railway station, the establishment of a new station along the East West Rail line near the resort, and the addition of specialized slip roads to the A42 have been disclosed. This strategic investment is predicated on bolstering the region’s transportation infrastructure and accessibility, thereby optimizing the economic benefits derived from the project
