Liverpool City Council awards new highway maintenance contract

Liverpool City Council has recently announced the approval of a significant multi-million pound contract for highways maintenance in the city. The £13 million contract, which will span up to five years, has been awarded to two experienced companies, Dowhigh Ltd and Huyton Asphalt Civils Ltd. This move comes as the Council is nearing the completion of the Highways Improvement Plan 2 (HIP2), which has already seen over £11 million invested in enhancing the city’s road infrastructure.

In addition to the highways maintenance contract, Liverpool City Council has also introduced a new £4 million contract for the Traffic Signal Upgrade Programme. This initiative aims to modernize key junctions, improve pedestrian safety, reduce congestion, and encourage active travel within the city. Furthermore, the Council is actively participating in ADEPT Live Labs 2, a UK-wide £30 million program funded by the Department for Transport, focused on decarbonizing the local highway network through the integration of innovative smart road and highway technologies.

Cllr Dan Barrington, Liverpool City Council Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, emphasized the importance of road safety and maintenance for the community. Highlighting the responsibility under the Highways Act 1980, Barrington stated that the new contracts will ensure the delivery of necessary repairs to the highest standards, including pothole repairs, resurfacing, and drainage maintenance. The selection of Dowhigh Ltd and Huyton Asphalt Civils Ltd as partners was based on their proven track record and local presence, ensuring the best value for money.

Matt Corke, Framework Director at Dowhigh, expressed pride in being awarded the contract and reaffirmed the commitment to delivering high-quality and long-lasting repairs that will positively impact communities across Liverpool. Similarly, Tony Carney, Managing Director of HA Civils, highlighted the ongoing partnership with Liverpool City Council, aiming to prioritize carbon reduction, create sustainable employment opportunities, deliver social value, and provide reliable services throughout the contract duration.
