Volunteers clear 156 dog poo bags from Scunthorpe playing fields

A team of dedicated volunteers took it upon themselves to clean up a children’s playground that was plagued by 156 bags of discarded dog feces in just one day. The shocking amount of waste was discovered on the Everest Playing Fields in Ashby near Scunthorpe, prompting one of the volunteers, Jayne Eaton, to label the field as “pretty grotty.” Ms. Eaton expressed her disappointment, stating, “It’s a shame because it’s a lovely field.”

The Scunthorpe Litter Pickers group, to which Ms. Eaton belongs, decided to take action by posting a photo of the bags on social media in the hopes of sparking awareness among dog owners. Ms. Eaton explained that the intention behind the social media post was to make dog walkers “a bit guilty” when they see the bags piling up in public spaces. She emphasized the impact on the community and local residents due to the disregard for cleanliness.

Despite the efforts of the volunteers to clear the playground of waste, they were disheartened to find freshly discarded bags reappear the following day. In addition to the bags of dog feces, the group came across other items during their cleaning sessions, such as a crisp packet dating all the way back to 2002. The perseverance of the volunteers highlights the ongoing struggle to maintain cleanliness in public spaces and the importance of community awareness and responsibility
