An individual who was deeply affected by severe post-natal depression in 1998, resulting in the tragic death of her newborn baby boy, has been given a compassionate sentence by a judge in Liverpool. Joanne Sharkey, a resident of Liverpool, was revealed to be the mother of the baby in July 2023 after a DNA match was found with her older son, Matthew Sharkey, who had been detained for an unrelated offense. The infant, named Baby Callum at the time, was discovered wrapped in bin bags in woodland in Warrington, Cheshire, on 11 March 1998.

Sharkey admitted to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility at Liverpool Crown Court, as medical experts determined that her mental health greatly impaired her ability to make rational decisions when she took the life of her child.
