Police confirmed that a man who was reported to be carrying a firearm and was subsequently shot dead by officers was actually wielding a knife. The incident took place at Milton Keynes Central on Elder Gate at 12:55 BST on Tuesday when officers responded to reports of a man with a firearm. Despite efforts to save his life, the man was declared dead at 13:44 by Thames Valley Police (TVP).
Following the fatal shooting, TVP revealed that the officers had encountered a man brandishing a knife who quickly approached them with it. In a statement released on Tuesday, the police stated that armed officers had confronted a white man holding a knife outside the station. Milton Keynes commander, Ch Supt Emma Baillie, sought to reassure the community by emphasizing that there was no broader threat to the public stemming from the incident.
Eyewitnesses recounted the tense moment between the officers and the suspect, with the man reportedly ignoring commands to drop to the ground. Hever Marin, who heard a loud gunshot, expressed distress over the altercation. Shazna Muzammil, a councillor and Conservative group leader at Milton Keynes City Council, described the incident as “shocking” while commending the swift response of the police and emergency services to ensure the safety of residents and passengers.
In light of the incident, the force has made a self-referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and has urged the public to refrain from sharing any footage or speculating about the details online.
