An 11-year-old girl has gone missing after entering the River Thames in east London, according to police reports. The incident occurred near Bargehouse Causeway in North Woolwich at around 13:15 BST. Following the girl’s entry into the river, a “large scale” search was initiated. However, after a few hours, the search operation was scaled down as the Metropolitan Police took charge of the situation, with assistance from the London Ambulance Service (LAS) and London Fire Brigade (LFB).
It is understood that the girl was with friends on a slipway by the waterside before she disappeared into the water. Neighbors attempted to assist after some youngsters raised the alarm. One resident provided authorities with the girl’s clothes, including socks, shoes, a jacket, and a mobile phone. According to witnesses, a young boy tried to rescue the girl by holding her hand, but unfortunately, he was unable to prevent her from slipping away.
Efforts to locate the missing girl involved various emergency services, including the LFB, HM Coastguard, the RNLI, London Ambulance Service, and the Metropolitan Police Service. Utilizing drone technology and a fire boat, the LFB conducted search operations until around 15:50 BST. Following the conclusion of the search efforts, the police assumed responsibility for the incident.
