£36.95An ambitious fundraising effort to build a commemorative playground at the primary school attended by two young victims of the Southport attack has successfully reached its £250,000 goal. Alice Aguiar, nine, and Bebe King, six, tragically lost their lives along with seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe during an attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on July 29. In response, Sergio Aguiar, Alice’s father, initiated the campaign to construct a new playground that will feature a performance stage and library at Churchtown Primary School, where Alice was a student. The playground will also be dedicated to Bebe, who was a former student at the school.
During an interview on BBC Breakfast, Mr. Aguiar expressed his gratitude as the fundraising goal was met, sharing, “In the next few years, thousands of children will enjoy that playground.” He fondly recalled how Alice felt like the school was a second home to her, highlighting that she would have been immensely proud of the playground project. Mr. Aguiar remarked on the generosity of donors, noting the kindness of people who have supported the initiative by contributing towards the playground’s development. He also mentioned the heartfelt reactions he has received from individuals who have expressed their excitement for the upcoming playground.
Following his appearance on the program, Mr. Aguiar will participate in the London Marathon next month alongside Alice’s headteacher, Jinnie Payne. Payne has confirmed that the playground’s construction is slated for completion by September. Alan Bowen, Alice’s beloved teacher at Churchtown Primary, envisioned her lively presence on the playground’s stage, envisioning her singing, twirling her hair, and leading others. This uplifting initiative comes in the wake of Axel Rudakubana’s conviction in January, where he was sentenced to a minimum of 52 years for the murders of the three young girls and the attempted murders of several other individuals, including children and adults present during the attack
