A Russian cargo ship captain has been accused of gross negligence manslaughter following a collision with an oil tanker in the North Sea. Vladimir Motin, 59, from Primorsky in St Petersburg, Russia, is facing charges and has been detained by police. The incident occurred off the East Yorkshire coast between the Portuguese-flagged Solong and the US-registered tanker Stena Immaculate around 10:00 GMT on Monday.
One crew member of the Solong, Filipino national Mark Angelo Pernia, 38, is currently missing and presumed dead in the tragic collision. The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed this information as part of their investigation. Frank Ferguson, head of the Crown Prosecution Service Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, emphasized the importance of a fair trial for the defendant, urging against any actions that could jeopardize the legal proceedings.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB). Initial findings suggest that the Solong was en route from Grangemouth to Rotterdam and had previously traveled the same path multiple times. The MAIB reported that the collision occurred at 09:47 GMT when the Solong struck the anchored Stena Immaculate near the River Humber entrance. Salvage experts have boarded the Stena Immaculate to assess the damage, with a meticulous and ongoing process in place. Despite the fire damage on the Solong, concerns about pollution have been minimal.
All 23 crew members on board the Stena Immaculate are American and are currently in Grimsby. They are expected to be repatriated in due course as the investigation continues. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of the vessels and prevent any environmental hazards
