At the Southbank Centre in London, a unique adventure playground has opened for the summer, showcasing art made entirely from repurposed waste materials. Replay, created by Hull-based Herd Theatre, is a space where discarded items are given a new life. Ruby Thompson from Herd mentioned, “We reached out to theatres, events companies, factories, and businesses to rescue items that were destined for the bin or forgotten on a shelf.”
The response to the project was overwhelming, with donations ranging from backdrops from fashion shows like Alexander McQueen to props from TV adverts. One remarkable inclusion is hundreds of tubes from a bandage factory and the actual red carpet from the Bafta Television Awards. Visitors to Replay will not only experience the innovative use of waste materials but will also be treated to a score created from ‘recycled sounds’ generated by the collected waste. Additionally, audio recordings from local families and sounds from the Southbank Centre, including the unique sound of a ticket being scanned, will be part of the experience.
Replay is open to the public for free and will continue to welcome visitors until 1 June. The initiative aims to promote sustainability and creativity by highlighting the potential of overlooked materials. By transforming waste into art, the project encourages individuals to reconsider their perspectives on environmental conservation and resource management. With a focus on positivity and innovation, Replay offers a refreshing approach to engaging with recycled materials and redefining waste as a valuable resource
