Man Utd to build 'iconic' £2bn 100,000-capacity stadium close to Old Trafford

Manchester United has revealed their plans to construct the largest stadium in the UK, a new £2 billion 100,000-seater ground near old Trafford. This iconic stadium will replace the club’s current home once construction is completed. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe expressed his desire to create the “world’s greatest football stadium” through this project that is expected to be finished in five years. Following an extensive consultation process, the decision to develop a new stadium rather than renovate the existing one was made.

Old Trafford, Manchester United’s iconic home since 1910, will continue to host matches until the new stadium is operational. The design for the new stadium, crafted by Foster and Partners, will feature a unique umbrella design and a public plaza double the size of Trafalgar Square. Additionally, the stadium will include three towering masts named “the trident” that will stand 200 meters tall and be visible from up to 25 miles away.

Manchester United, facing £1 billion in debt, has not disclosed how they plan to finance the new stadium. Club chief executive Omar Berrada views this project as an appealing investment opportunity and is confident in securing the necessary funding. The stadium’s development will be part of the larger regeneration of the Old Trafford area, which is projected to be the most significant project of its kind in the UK since the London 2012 Olympics transformation. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has already shown government support for the initiative.

Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson emphasized the importance of striving for excellence in all aspects of the club, including the stadium. Leaving behind the historic Old Trafford may stir controversy, but Ferguson believes it is essential for the future growth and success of Manchester United. Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham echoed this sentiment, envisioning a stadium true to the club’s traditions and accessible to all fans without exclusion
