A groundbreaking art project highlighting an inventive approach to eco-friendly roadway infrastructure is set to debut in the heart of Liverpool City Centre. Created by the prestigious artist collective Reskate, this glow-in-the-dark installation aims to showcase the potential of advanced sustainable technology within the realm of highway development. Situated at the intersection of Hanover Street and College Lane in Liverpool ONE, this artwork is part of the ADEPT Live Labs 2 initiative focused on decarbonizing local roads across the UK.
As a visual representation of the project’s dedication to exploring environmentally conscious solutions, this art piece utilizes Luminokrom, a photoluminescent paint that absorbs light during the day and emits a radiance at night. This dynamic transformation from day to night not only highlights the capabilities of the paint but also serves as a captivating display for the public. The selection of Liverpool as the site for this installation underscores the city’s active involvement in the Live Labs 2 program, with additional trials of the Luminokrom paint taking place in Everton Park to reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional street lighting.
The artwork’s design, conceptualized by Reskate, merges themes of sustainability, life, music, and the future. The collective, comprising artists Minuskula and Javier de Riba from Donostia-San Sebastián and Barcelona, respectively, is recognized for their site-specific murals globally. By integrating meaningful messages through thoughtful aesthetic choices, Reskate aims to foster awareness and engagement in environmental stewardship. The Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning & Transport oversees the Live Labs 2 program, which involves seven projects exploring new solutions for decarbonizing construction and maintenance practices in local highway networks.
Liverpool City Council Leader, Cllr Liam Robinson, expressed excitement about the innovative artwork’s ability to showcase advancements in decarbonizing roadways, paving the way for future developments. Donna Howitt, Place Strategy Director at Liverpool ONE, highlighted the collaboration’s significance in bringing art to the city center and emphasizing sustainability while providing a unique experience for visitors.
