Telford grooming victim living in fear as attacker to be freed

A survivor of abuse by a Telford grooming gang is expressing her fear as one of her attackers is scheduled to be released from prison. Despite Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s request for the Parole Board to review the decision, Mohammed Ali Sultan’s release is impending. The survivor, identified as Kate Elysia, shared her concerns about feeling unsafe and not being given the opportunity to provide a victim impact statement for Sultan’s parole hearing.

Kate Elysia, who has chosen not to remain anonymous, voiced her worries about her safety, stating, “I don’t think they’ve done everything they could to keep me safe.” Although Sultan will be subject to public protection meetings, Kate Elysia expressed frustration at not being informed of the details. She highlighted the uncertainty surrounding Sultan’s intentions and how she only knows him based on his previous harmful actions.

After Sultan’s imprisonment, Kate Elysia relocated from Shropshire, pursued higher education, and has been a qualified mental health nurse for over a decade. The decision for Sultan’s release was finalized on 13 December, with Kate Elysia being notified on 6 January, which she deemed as a belated update. Shocked by the expediency of the decision, Kate Elysia emphasized the need for more time to come to terms with the circumstances, especially considering that she is not Sultan’s only victim.

Sultan’s criminal history dates back to 2012 when he was sentenced to seven years for engaging in sexual acts with two teenage girls. His imprisonment was prolonged in 2015 and subsequently in 2019 following additional convictions for sexual offenses. While Kate Elysia criticized the parole process for lacking her input, the Ministry of Justice assured that Sultan would undergo stringent probation surveillance. Failure to adhere to the strict terms of his release would result in his immediate return to prison
