Liverpool City Council is launching a specialized task force in honor of International Women’s Day, with the objective of enhancing women’s access to healthcare services and addressing existing inequalities. The task force aims to develop a comprehensive Women’s Health Framework by June 2025, outlining recommendations to improve health outcomes for women and girls in Liverpool, ensuring they have an equal opportunity to lead healthier lives, regardless of their background.
The recently published State of Health Report, Liverpool 2040, sheds light on the current and future health challenges encountered by women in the city, including economic disparities, limited access to education and employment opportunities, barriers to essential healthcare services, and high rates of violence against women and girls. These challenges are further compounded by factors such as ethnicity and sexual orientation, underscoring the urgent need for targeted interventions to address these issues.
To confront these challenges head-on, a multi-agency task force has been assembled, bringing together strategic leaders and key organizations from various sectors across Liverpool. Their mission is to conduct a thorough analysis of the health needs of women in the city, identify gaps in service provision, and utilize evidence-based data to drive meaningful action. The overarching goal of this strategy is to diminish inequalities and ensure that all women, irrespective of their background or circumstances, receive the support they need to lead healthier lives.
Deputy Leader of Liverpool City Council, Cllr Ruth Bennett, emphasized the importance of International Women’s Day as a moment to celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of women globally. However, she also acknowledged that there is still a long way to go in addressing the significant challenges faced by women, especially in terms of health and equality.
