Cardiff Roads Set to Raise Speed Limits to 30mph
In a recent announcement, it has been revealed that the maximum speed limit on four busy roads in Cardiff will be increased back to 30mph from the previously enforced 20mph. The decision follows a review of the 20mph speed limit policy implemented by the Welsh government in September 2023, which covered 37% of the Welsh road network. Cardiff council believes that reverting back to the 30mph limit will help alleviate congestion on main roads in and out of the city.
The local authority took into consideration the feedback from residents, businesses, and transport companies before making the decision to change the speed limits. It is expected that more stretches of road, especially those away from built-up areas, will also return to the 30mph limit in the near future. Notably, a similar move was announced in Wrexham last month, where 50 stretches of road were reverted to 20mph.
Following a comprehensive review of 192 roads in Cardiff, certain factors such as road characteristics and location determined whether a particular road was eligible for the speed limit change. Some of the affected routes include sections of Newport Road, Ocean Way, Hadfield Road, and a portion of Western Avenue. The decision-making process involved input from various stakeholders including the public, bus companies, local councillors, MPs, and Senedd members.
Mr. De’Ath, a representative, emphasized that the 20mph policy aims to reduce traffic-related casualties and promote walking and cycling. However, roads with high pedestrian and cyclist activity will retain the lower speed limit unless evidence suggests that higher speeds can be safely implemented. The selected roads set to return to 30mph will undergo the necessary Traffic Regulation Process as mandated by law
