A groundbreaking agreement has been reached between Ibiza officials and Airbnb to address unregulated holiday rentals, resulting in the removal of 300 properties from the platform. The Consell d’Eivissa and Airbnb came together in this historic deal, swiftly taking action to eliminate rental properties that are operating outside the bounds of legality, as reported by The Independent. This agreement marks a significant milestone in Ibiza’s efforts to combat overcrowding and regulate tourist accommodation on the island, with council president Vicent Marí emphasizing the importance of this endeavor.
The initiative targets properties that fail to comply with island regulations, such as campsites situated outside designated areas and individual rooms within existing properties that lack council approval. Airbnb’s Country Manager for Spain and Portugal, Jaime Rodríguez de Santiago, expressed the shared interest in preserving Ibiza as a top-tier tourist destination for future generations. Additionally, other travel organizations like Ibiza’s tourist board Fomento del Turismo and travel promotion company Asociación de Viviendas Turísticas Vacacionales (AVAT) have joined forces in support of this effort to regulate accommodation on the island.
In conjunction with the agreement, Ibiza’s council has established a web portal showcasing all licensed properties on the island for visitors to access prior to their trip. This portal offers valuable tourist information, exclusive deals, and additional resources for tourists. This collaborative action signifies a significant step towards ensuring the sustainability and quality of tourism in Ibiza for years to come
