What’s the true secret to happiness? Scientists may be about to find out

In an ambitious endeavor to uncover the mysteries of happiness, researchers are embarking on the largest study of its kind to date. The Global Happiness Megastudy aims to recruit participants from around the world to identify techniques and interventions that can elevate one’s spirits. Harry Clelland, a postdoctoral research fellow at Hungary’s ELTE University and a member of the study team, expresses his enthusiasm for the project, despite its daunting nature.

The project was initiated by Elizabeth Dunn and Dunigan Folk from the University of British Columbia, who discovered a lack of scientific evidence supporting commonly recommended strategies for improving happiness. Previous studies on happiness have been limited to ‘WEIRD’ participants, primarily from western countries, resulting in a narrow scope of data. The Global Happiness Megastudy seeks to address these limitations by testing a wide range of interventions on a universal happiness measure.

With an expert advisory panel dubbed the ‘Avengers of happiness studies,’ the project aims to finalize 24 accessible and cost-effective interventions. These interventions include activities like weight training, acts of kindness, and interacting with AI bots. The researchers hope to collaborate with colleagues worldwide to recruit 30,000 study participants who will be randomly assigned interventions. Clelland himself finds joy in seeking truth alongside good companions and anticipates completing the challenging project with his sanity intact.
