Volodymyr Zelensky gets warm reception from King Charles at Sandringham

Ukrainian President Zelensky recently had a meeting with King Charles III at Sandringham following a summit with European leaders to discuss peace in Ukraine. Upon his arrival at the King’s Norfolk residence, local residents, including some holding Ukraine flags, gathered outside to witness him arrive by helicopter. Zelensky had been in London for talks on European defense after a heated exchange with US President Donald Trump at the White House.

The meeting between Zelensky and the King lasted just under an hour, where they were served tea in Sandringham’s Saloon room. King Charles III has previously voiced support for Ukraine, condemning Russia’s aggression towards the country, lauding the Ukrainian people for their courage and resilience. Their first meeting took place at Buckingham Palace during Zelensky’s surprise visit to the UK in 2023, with today’s meeting being at the request of the Ukrainian president and with the UK government’s approval.

After the summit, Sir Keir unveiled a four-step plan aimed at ensuring peace in Ukraine, including maintaining military aid and establishing a “coalition of the willing” to defend the country as part of a peace agreement. The meeting in Norfolk allowed Zelensky to meet with the King ahead of Trump’s upcoming second state visit to the UK, which came about after Sir Keir presented the US president with an invitation letter from the monarch during a recent trip to Washington.
