The residents living in proximity to Land’s End have been urged to invest in earplugs to cope with the incessant fog alarm coming from a malfunctioning lighthouse. For the past week, the Longships Lighthouse has been emitting a loud beep every 13 seconds, disturbing the peace of those nearby.
According to the National Coastwatch Institution Gwennap Head, the lighthouse horn has been blaring “all day, all night,” prompting suggestions for locals to consider purchasing earplugs for some relief. A visitor to the area described it as the “noisiest sunset” they had experienced, highlighting the disruptive nature of the constant beeping.
Trinity House, responsible for managing over 60 lighthouses in the UK, acknowledged the issue with the “audible hazard warning signal” at Longships Lighthouse. Plans are underway to send technicians to address the fault causing the annoying sound. The high-pitched beep is typically reserved for foggy conditions, making it most noticeable at Land’s End and affecting residents in nearby areas like Sennen and Cape Cornwall.
Notably, a spokesperson speculated that the problem might stem from a malfunctioning visibility sensor, triggering the hazard warning signal erroneously. Despite the absence of foggy weather this week, the blaring sound continues to disrupt the peace. Longships Lighthouse, constructed in 1875 as a 35m (115ft) tower located 2km (1.25 miles) off Land’s End, transitioned to automation in 1996, ending the era of resident lighthouse keepers. The continuous beeping has become a conversation starter in the area, sparking curiosity and discussion among locals and visitors alike
