Teams are tirelessly working to repair the massive sinkholes that suddenly appeared on a road in Surrey, according to the local council. One of the sinkholes on Godstone High Street quickly grew to 65ft (20m) in length within just 12 hours, while a second one opened on the opposite side of the street. The council mentioned that road closures and diversions will be in effect for an extended period as the repair work continues.
Structural experts are currently evaluating the site to assess the risks and determine the necessary steps to ensure safety and carry out repairs. The safety of everyone involved is the primary concern, as stated by the local authority. To determine the required stabilization and repair efforts, the holes will be analyzed using advanced 3D scanning equipment. Due to the unprecedented level of damage, the repair process is expected to take several months.
Residents of thirty homes were initially evacuated as a precaution, but now six of those homes have been deemed safe for occupants to return. Royal Mail is temporarily holding mail for affected properties at the Redhill Delivery Office, where homeowners can retrieve them by presenting identification. Despite the ongoing road closures, all local schools are operating as usual, although some bus routes have been diverted to accommodate the repairs. Utility companies will begin broader repair efforts once the site is declared safe, although water and power services have already been restored to the surrounding area
