British couple in their 70s arrested by Taliban

In Afghanistan, a British couple in their seventies, Peter Reynolds, 79, and Barbie Reynolds, 75, have been taken into custody by the Taliban. The couple had been involved in training projects in Afghanistan for nearly two decades. Their daughter, Sarah Entwistle, expressed concern over not hearing from her parents for over two weeks since their detention.

Despite the Taliban’s restrictions on women working and education for girls over the age of 12, the Reynolds were running training projects for mothers and children. Employing their expertise gained from years of running projects in Kabul and Bamiyan, the couple continued their work even after most westerners had left the country following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.

Initially, the couple managed to communicate with their children through text messages after their arrest. However, the communication abruptly ceased, leaving their family worried about their well-being. While the Reynolds’ dedication to helping Afghanistan remained steadfast, their children are pleading with the Taliban for their release so they can return home and resume their important work.

The Foreign Office confirmed the detention of the British nationals in Afghanistan, where the UK does not have an embassy and assistance is limited. The Taliban’s stance on women working for NGOs led to concerns about the Reynolds’ arrest, as the couple’s commitment to the country has always been unwavering. The situation remains precarious as the Reynolds are being held alongside their American friend and a translator, prompting pleas from their family for their safe return
