Ronan Keating says justice system is 'broken' after fatal crash

Irish singer-songwriter Ronan Keating has expressed his dissatisfaction with the justice system in the Republic of Ireland following a recent case where a man escaped prison time for causing the death of Keating’s brother in a tragic crash. Keating voiced his frustration on Instagram, stating, “You can kill a man… and you can walk free. Not even a single night in prison. Just a slap on the wrist and a ticket to carry on your life, like nothing ever happened.” The incident occurred when 22-year-old Dean Harte collided with Ciarán Keating’s car near Swinford, County Mayo, resulting in Keating’s tragic death.

Harte, who pleaded guilty to careless driving causing death, received a 17-month suspended sentence at Castlebar Circuit Court in Mayo. The court heard that on the day of the crash, Ciarán Keating and his wife Annemarie were on their way to watch their son play football when the collision occurred. Harte failed to navigate a bend on the N5 between Swinford and Bohola, causing his Audi A3 to crash into Keating’s Ford Focus, resulting in the death of the 57-year-old.

Ronan Keating condemned the sentence as “devastating” and criticized the lack of accountability in the justice system. He questioned why such behavior on the roads continues to result in tragic accidents and deaths across Ireland. Keating expressed his disappointment in the outcome and called out all those involved in the legal process for contributing to the heartbreaking situation faced by his family. He vowed to fight for justice for his brother, emphasizing the need for a reformed system to prevent similar incidents from occurring and to ensure justice for all families affected by such tragedies
