Former drummer of The Jam, Rick Buckler, has passed away at 69 years old, as confirmed by his ex-bandmates on social media. The Jam, a band that gained fame in the late 1970s punk and new wave era, is credited with sparking a resurgence in mod fashion and music. Bandmate Paul Weller expressed his shock and sadness at Buckler’s death, while bass player Bruce Foxton shared that he was devastated.
Described by his family as a “loving husband, father, and grandfather,” Buckler was known to be devoted to many and will be greatly missed. He peacefully passed away in Woking on Monday evening after battling a brief illness with his family by his side. The Jam enjoyed a successful run with 18 consecutive UK top 40 singles from their debut in 1977 until their disbandment in 1982. Their hits included chart-toppers like “Going Underground” and “A Town Called Malice.”
Following his time with The Jam, Buckler and Foxton collaborated in a successor band called From the Jam, while Weller pursued a career with the Style Council and as a solo artist. Recently, Buckler had to cancel a spoken word tour in the UK due to health issues. Both Weller and Foxton expressed their shock and sorrow over Buckler’s passing, reflecting on their early days of rehearsing in Woking and the journey they went through together. The cause of Buckler’s death has not been officially disclosed
