A fire has broken out at a luxury hotel in London, prompting the evacuation of around 100 people from the five-star establishment. The blaze at Chiltern Firehouse in Marylebone began in the ducting leading from the ground floor to the roof of the building, with a plant room at roof level also catching fire, according to the London Fire Brigade (LFB). The hotel, known for being a celebrity hotspot and frequented by A-listers such as Jennifer Lawrence, Lady Gaga, Tom Cruise, and Johnny Depp, is located on Chiltern Street and was the venue for Kylie Minogue’s 50th birthday party in 2018.
Eyewitness Guy Fischman, who was heading home from work near Bond Street, described seeing “embers” and an “orange glow” emanating from a window at the hotel. The 23-year-old from Richmond in south-west London mentioned that the whole street was filled with smoke and that the visibility was severely impacted. Despite not expecting the situation to be so dire, Mr. Fischman noted the efforts of firefighters using water jets to combat the blaze, while he lamented the strong smell of smoke lingering on his coat.
In response to the fire, twenty fire engines and approximately 125 firefighters were dispatched to the scene from various fire stations including Euston, Soho, Paddington, West Hampstead, and Kensington and Chelsea. The cause of the fire is currently unknown as efforts continue to contain and extinguish the flames on the luxury hotel’s premises. The situation marks a significant challenge for emergency responders in London, with the extent of the damage and impact on the hotel yet to be fully assessed
