Andrew Gwynne: Labour health minister sacked over WhatsApp messages

The Health Minister, Andrew Gwynne, has been sacked from his position after it was revealed that he had sent a number of insulting and abusive messages on WhatsApp. The Mail on Sunday published a report about his unsavoury messages about fellow MPs, councillors, and constituents. As a result of the revelations, he has also been suspended from the Labour Party. Gwynne has stated that he accepts the decision of both the PM and the Labour Party and would cooperate with the investigations if there were any further proceedings.

In a statement, a government spokesperson has said that Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, is committed to upholding decent standards of those in public office and would not hesitate to take decisive action if any public servant fails to meet those standards. The Health Minister expressed regret and sorrow for the offence caused by his comments, insisting that the comments were ill-judged.

The Labour Party spokesperson confirmed that Gwynne has been administratively suspended as a member of the Party and investigations were ongoing. It is in line with the Party’s rules and regulations, and the Party would take firm action against any member, including Gwynne, who does not meet the Party’s expectations and high standards.

The report in the Mail on Sunday revealed that Gwynne had joked in a WhatsApp group called Trigger Me Timbers about a 72-year-old woman’s death and expressed uncalled for jokes about another constituent being run over by a truck. Gwynne also reportedly made sexist comments on Angela Rayner and racist remarks about Labour MP, Diane Abbott. The Conservatives have stated that Gwynne has breached public trust to a large extent and had exposed the rot present in the Labour Party that needed immediate fixing
