A memorial has been erected outside the former location of the Watergate nightclub in Berlin, which closed permanently in December due to financial pressures. The gravestone, erected by anonymous Berlin group Steinzeit.alter, reads ‘Watergate 2002-2024’ and pays tribute to the venue, which had been a cultural institution for more than 22 years. Steinzeit.alter creates gravestones to honour shuttered cultural institutions across the city, with the aim of provoking people to think about what the loss of such venues means for Berlin’s thriving cultural scene
