The UK lost a grassroots music venue every fortnight in 2024, report finds

The Music Venue Trust (MVT) revealed that as many as 25 grassroots music venues had closed down in 2024, indicating a major concern in the industry. This information was made public by MVT CEO Mark David during the presentation of their Annual Report 2024 in the Houses of Parliament on January 23. David stated that “We are not acting fast enough on these things it’s as simple as that.” The report made clear the gravity of the issue and listed obstacles faced by the venues, while detailing what they need to stay in operation.

The MVT’s Annual Report highlighted the woes of live music venues, with 80 already giving up on hosting such events and over 200 having to seek emergency funding from the MVT. The report also detailed the decline the industry has experienced in touring over the last four decades. It further discussed the necessary measures to be taken to protect the sector which generates £500 million annually and is responsible for employing over 30,000 people.

UK artist Kate Nash was invited to perform at the event and spoke to the audience about the cost of touring, which she deemed deplorable. The music artist’s stance was further underscored by independent findings from a global survey of 1500 artists. This revealed that 84% of UK independent artists are unable to afford touring in 2025. Personal savings fund the careers for 70.6% of these artists, which is worse for those from working-class backgrounds that don’t have enough resources.

Finally, it is clear that something needs to be done to support these venues, and the industry as a whole. It is a matter of concern for thousands employed by the sector, but also an issue for those who enjoy independent and live music events around the country.
