Only 28% of nominees for the 2025 GRAMMY Awards are women, report finds

Consultancy AKAS has published a report titled “Missing Voices of Women in Music and Music News”, which shows that only 28% of this year’s GRAMMY nominees are women. Despite the media giving coverage to “clean sweeps” by artists like Adele, Billie Eilish, and Taylor Swift during previous ceremonies, the figures suggest that men make up the larger proportion of nominees, with only 20% of the nominations in the “Big Four” categories being women. Between 2017 and 2024, only one in every five nominations and awards at the GRAMMYs was presented to women.

While a bit of progress has been made in recent years, the report shows that the 2024 GRAMMYs were male-focused, with 75% of the nominees being male and over two-thirds of the winners. As a result, the report argues that the media projects a false image that implies women are achieving the greatest number of prizes. Luba Kassova, the author of the report, said that reporting on this issue should be more in line with reality, with the Recording Academy being encouraged to open up its nominations and winning database to examine gender analysis.

The report calls on the media to delve deeper into the problem, checking press releases and conducting investigations to uncover the true state of women’s achievements. With around a quarter of girls and GRAMMY-related headlines in 2024 including “dominate” and “rule”, the report suggests that the media portrays women as winners when only a select number are being recognized for their talent.
