Liverpool has launched a new service that provides free support for its residents in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Liv Life Liverpool, which is based on data provided by Public Health Liverpool’s State of Health in the City: Liverpool 2040 report, aims to support up to 1,000 families and 2,000 adults in its first year of operation. Sign-up is free and can be accessed via the program’s website, with potential participants required to meet eligibility criteria before a personalized weight-loss plan is developed. The program offers one-to-one coaching, weigh-in groups, and physical activity programs, spread across a 12-week period. It has also provided free on-the-go support via the Best-You app, which can help with reducing alcohol consumption and smoking cessation.
Liv Life Liverpool has been designed to improve the health of not only individuals but would extend to families and pregnant women. The program has been developed with consultation partners including the NHS and Liverpool’s wider community. It has been created to support people in developing knowledge and practical skill sets around food, nutrition, and physical activity. There is an emphasis on encouraging practical, long-term health habits in participants, rather than an acute focus on the scale numbers. The Liv Life Liverpool initiative has been set up against a background where nearly 63% of adults in Liverpool are overweight, with around one in four primary school children also overweight, increasing to one in three for secondary school children.
The Liverpool City Council lauded the program for its capability to assist individuals with eating healthy food and becoming more active. The process of losing weight is daunting for most people, but Liv Life Liverpool has attempted to create a sustainable and enjoyable weight-loss program that includes ample support built in. Achieving healthy weight is critical to mitigating the effects of life-threatening conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. Liv Life Liverpool offers much more than faith in the numbers on the scale, but it creates a decent platform for building healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
