Four university students who died in a crash have been remembered in heartfelt tributes. The four people who lost their lives in the accident were identified as 22-year-old Makyle Bayley, 21-year-old Eva Darold-Tchikaya, 24-year-old Anthony Hibbert, and 22-year-old Daljang Wol. All four were students at the University of Essex. The tragic incident occurred early on Saturday morning when a black Ford Focus crashed into a building on Magdalen Street, Colchester.

The victims were all described as playing an active and well-loved role in the university’s community clubs and societies. Ms Darold-Tchikaya, a member of the Essex Blades Dance Club and other societies, was known for her contributions. Meanwhile, Mr Hibbert and Mr Wol had been “outstanding members” of the Essex Rebels men’s basketball team, and Mr Bayley was a member of the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) basketball team.

The family of Mr Hibbert paid tribute to his kindness and passion for basketball which he shared with everyone he met. Speaking to the BBC, Colchester’s Labour MP Pam Cox described the event as “absolutely awful”. She sympathized with university staff, who she believed must be “absolutely torn apart” by the tragedy. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Essex, Prof Maria Fasli, extended her condolences to the loved ones of the victims and stated that the “whole university is in mourning”.

An investigation is currently ongoing to understand the cause of the collision. Essex Police, who are leading the investigation, have urged any witnesses or people with information to come forward for assistance. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the crash. Following the incident, condolences and tributes were left at the scene, with local residents and businesses coming together in support for the University of Essex and the families affected by the loss
