An investigation into fraud relating to payments made after a major data breach has led to the arrest of two Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers. About 9,500 officers’ and staff members’ information was mistakenly released in response to a freedom of information request in August 2023. The details included the surnames and first initials of each employee, their ranks or grades, the units in which they work and where they are based.
To help those affected take extra security and reassure measures, a £500 payment was offered, which was taken up by approximately 90% of staff. However, it later emerged that the information from the data breach had been obtained by dissident republicans.
On 29 January, the PSNI confirmed that two officers had been arrested as part of ongoing fraud investigations relating to the payment. Both officers were interviewed and bailed, and misconduct investigations are currently in progress. The duty status of both officers is also being considered.
Deputy Chief Constable Bobby Singleton stated that the highest standards of professionalism and integrity are expected and demanded from all police officers and staff, and that when the actions of individuals are suspected to fall short of these standards, it seriously undermines legitimacy, trust and public confidence in policing
