Barclays customers hit by third day of payment issues

Barclays is dealing with technical issues that have caused continued problems for customers with payments and transactions which began on Friday. This situation has persisted with the bank as efforts to resolve the issue are still ongoing. Affected customers spoke to BBC about problems which included difficulties with online and mobile banking and making payments. The cause of the issue is currently unknown, and there is no information on the number of people impacted. Based on the circumstances, it is not believed that the issue resulted from a cyber attack.

Barclays is one of the largest banks in the UK, with over 20 million retail customers in the country. Since Saturday, reports have surfaced from Downdetector, an outage monitor, which has confirmed almost 5,000 cases reported with the bank. This number is more than double the number reported the previous day. According to the bank’s website on Saturday afternoon, the issues with its online banking and app are still prevalent. Customers were advised that they may encounter problems when making or receiving payments.

The bank issued a statement to apologise and assure customers that it will not neglect those impacted. It said it will ensure that none of the impacted individuals would be left out of pocket. Friday was payday for a lot of people; hence, the situation caused some customers to be unable to make their payments to HMRC. Some users have reported the bank directed them to seek help from food banks, amid difficulties accessing their funds.

Barclays has assured its customers that they can withdraw cash and use their cards while the bank resolves the issue. The bank will communicate further updates with its clients when the issues are resolved. Additionally, the institution indicated that it will not leave vulnerable customers behind and that it will keep its call centres operational during the weekend
